Julio Valdez Project Space is pleased to present 6x6 Ceramic Tile Exhibition, its first group show in collaboration with the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) Staff Association Art Gallery and the IDB Country Offices. The exhibition will open on Thursday, February 21, from 6:00 – 9:00 PM at the SMV Gallery, 145 West 46 Street in New York City. The exhibition will be on view until March 7th, by appointment.

6x6 Ceramic Tile is an exhibition project of ceramic tiles conceived by artist and curator Ezequiel Taveras for Julio Valdez Studio (JVS) Project Space that invited artists from IDB member countries- selected by renowned curators in their respective nations - to participate with three pieces of ceramic per country. The exhibition brings together 72 works by 60 artists from 24 countries to express the contemporaneous in ceramic art. Each one of them has had the freedom to express - without limitation, through the use of a single substance and a common format of 6 x 6 inches - their distinctive ideas, concepts, and approaches, and in so doing, rather than creating distances, bring us together in a shared love of the material, the clay, the soil.

As the exhibition’s chief curator, Ezequiel Taveras, emphasizes 6x6 is a creative challenge that not only facilitates the artists absolute freedom, but also opens a new path for the very expression of their works. In addition, we hope to launch a new challenge for the viewer who, accustomed to large formats of information, will need to interact with a small ceramic tile that today has been transformed into a unique work of art. More than just an object, it may also manifest a whole conception of life, creation, or existence.

With 6x6 Ceramic Tile, we intend to link the cultures, thoughts, and aesthetic concepts common to the member countries of the IDB through a shared material and technique. This initiative, in addition to creating interactive opportunities among the artists, offers them a new space for international exposure. Following this exhibition, 6x6 will be opening this February 21 in SMV Gallery in NYC.
